Southern Utah Hoops fifth and sixth grade SUU Halftime Show • Nov. 2, 2013

The fifth grade Southern Utah Hoops team played Vegas Elite in September 2013 at the 2013 St. George Shootout.

The game is split into three parts.

Cedar Hoops Mission Statement:

The mission of Cedar Hoops Youth Basketball is to prepare young athletes in the Cedar City area to be able to compete at a high school level or better. Cedar Hoops will strive to accomplish the following objectives:
  • Create a positive environment where players can ENJOY playing the game
  • Teach basketball skills, rules, teamwork and game strategy
  • Develop coordination, athleticism and strength which will carry over to other sports
  • Model and teach competitiveness with an emphasis on sportsmanship
  • Promote self-esteem and camaraderie among the players

The coach of Cedar Hoops will strive to:

  • Create a positive environment for players to learn, practice and play
  • Provide all team members with an equal opportunity to learn and play
  • Make sure each player feels an important part of the team
  • Establish reasonable goals for team improvement and growth
  • Set a good example for sportsmanship
  • Establish team and individual expectations that players and parents understand
  • Follow AAU guidelines and rules
  • Make sure that each player has fun and continues to love the game

Each parent should make every effort to:

  • Attend games whenever possible
  • Make sure child attends practices; and call the coach when unable to
  • Be supportive of the coach and all other team members
  • Understand that success is measured by improvement not always by winning
  • Look for opportunities to work with your child to improve their game
  • Communicate with the coach in appropriate ways; discuss your concerns off the court and in private
  • Remember that the game of basketball is fun for the kids and parents should strive to keep it that way
  • Look for ways to contribute to the growth of the team with fundraising efforts and event planning

Expectations of players:

  • Do your best in practice and games
  • Be on time to practice and games
  • Stay attentive in practice and learn to listen to the coach
  • Cheer your teammates
  • Always be a good sport in wins or losses
  • Be respectful to the referees
  • Don’t get discouraged when making a mistake, but learn from mistakes and remain positive when receiving instruction
  • Always remember basketball is fun

Cedar Hoops philosophy regarding playing time:

Every player who consistently attends practice and fulfills the coach’s expectations should receive playing time. However, time will not be split evenly across the team. Some players will perform better than others and will play more minutes. Cedar Hoops believes actual game experience is a vital element to the development of each player. Bottom line – if you come to practice, work hard with a good attitude, you will play in games.
